Rockabilly icon Ronnie Hawkins released this 1964 single on his own Hawk Records label, which he launched just after his move to Ontario, Canada that same year. His original band ‘The Hawks‘ all remained in their native Arkansas, with the exception of drummer Levon Helm. This single features a brand new back-up ‘Hawks’ band comprised of Canadians – guitarist Robbie Robertson, saxophone & organist Garth Hudson, pianist Richard Manuel & bassist Rick Danko, plus Helm. This version of The Hawks would leave Ronnie a few years later to do studio work, then eventually hook up with Bob Dylan in a group that would soon come to be known as “The Band”. The “Hawk” & his group kick butt on this cover of the blues classic which became a minor hit in Canada & the US deep south. Enjoy your weekend!
