Lost Northwest Treasures: Gil Bateman – “Goodnight Irene”

Gil Bateman – Goodnight Irene

I recently had a conversation with regular contributor Bill Ogden about this obscure artist from our region & thought this a good chance to offer a local track this week.  Gil Bateman only recorded 3 singles, one of these for Jerry Dennon’s Jerden Records.  He recorded 2 more for the Panorama label, including this B-side of “Wicked Love” his second 45. Although this is credited to Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter & archivist Alan Lomax, this version has much different lyrics aside from the recognizable chorus.  Gil gives this folk-blues classic a good rockin’ beat.

Thanks to Bill Ogden for the suggestion.  Have a great weekend from your friends at Puget Sound Media!
