Lost Treasures: Donald Fagen – The Nightfly

Since others have been posting songs about DJ’s, I thought it my turn to profile a DJ song that is probably a better fit for some (but not all) of my past on-air career:  Donald Fagen’s LP title track “The Nightfly” – this week’s Lost Treasure.  Having worked as a DJ in jazz radio, both as a jazz show host at a couple of campus FM’s, at Canada’s first all-jazz station : Vancouver’s C-JAZ FM & as the operator of  jazz oriented “hobby” Internet webcaster Sky Valley Radio for over 10 years, this song truly resonates with me.  The album was released in 1983 on Warner Bros. records & was not the first time Donald Fagen wrote & sang about radio. In the late 1970’s along with now deceased musical partner Walter Becker, Steely Dan performed the title track to the movie “FM” & the song became an AOR & AAA FM radio staple.  I would also like to dedicate this song to Seattle-Tacoma’s very own ‘Nightfly’ – Jim Wilke, who has been spinning jazz in our region for well over 50 years now & continues to host the weekly “Jazz Northwest” Sundays at 2pm on 88.5 KNKX.  This song’s for you too, Jim!  Have a great weekend friends & thank you for pointing your browsers each day to Puget Sound Media.
