Lost Treasures: The Delfonics – Ready Or Not (Here I Come)

This week’s Lost Treasures features a slice of Philly soul from 1968.  The Delfonics began in 1964 as The Orfonics before changing their name in 1965. They came to the attention of Cameo/Parkway Records arranger/producer Thom Bell who recorded their first hit in 1966.  When that label folded, Bell became house producer for Philly Groove Records & in 1968 produced & co-wrote “Ready Or Not (Here I Come)” which would begin a string of hits for the Delfonics on the R&B charts & soon these attracted top 40 radio PD’s & the national charts.  Thom Bell produced 4 albums & a few more successful singles for the band before moving on to produce The Stylistics & The Spinners in the early 70’s.  The Delfonics hits dried up without the magic of Thom Bell’s trademark production style  & they had a few more minor hits before disbanding in 1975.  The group reformed in 1980 & performed live for the next 20 years before again disbanding.  Various solo members have used variations on the ‘Delfonics’ name for performances since that time.  The label indicates the song length is 2:53 but this a misprint that showed on all copies of the single, including promo copies. Enjoy this Philly soul classic as you kick off your weekend!
