Lost Treasures: Jim Stafford – “Swamp Witch”

There’s no tricks on this week’s Lost Treasures, only treats.  From 1973 on MGM Records, it’s Jim Stafford’s debut single “Swamp Witch” which preceded his better known hits Spiders And Snakes” “My Girl Bill”.  This first single only made it to the bottom of the national charts & airplay was uneven throughout North American radio.  Nonetheless, it was enough for MGM to continue releasing new material of Stafford’s to both country & top 40 radio.  In the summer of 1975, Jim hosted a six-week summer variety series on ABC-TV: “The Jim Stafford Show” which led to some guest appearances on a number of TV series & also made him a frequent guest on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show”.  In the late 80’s he hosted the cable network series “Nashville On The Road”.  Jim Stafford has a number of songwriting credits & his material has been covered by George Jones & Jerry Reed among others.  He continues to perform regularly at the theater named after him in Branson, MO.  Enjoy this treat from the post-Halloween goody bag & have a great weekend!
