From 1967, this week’s Lost Treasure was released on Columbia Records.  “Hey Baby (They’re Playing Our Song)” was the 4th hit for Chicago group The Buckinghams.  The group began as The Pulsations in the mid-60’s.  After winning a local battle of the bands competition in late 1965, the Pulsations secured a job as the house band on Chicago’s WGN-TV variety show called ‘All-Time Hits’.  Their first few singles on local label USA Records were minor hits on Chicago radio in 1966.  By late summer of that year they had their first national top 40 hit with “Kind Of A Drag”.  After a couple of personnel changes, the group came to the attention of musician & producer James William Guerico  who secured The Buckinghams a contract with Columbia Records.  Guerico’s productions took on a brass & horn-heavy approach which gained them some airplay on a few R&B stations in addition to American top 40 outlets.

“Hey baby (They’re Playing Our Song)” entered the top 10 in the US & Canada and gained the group airplay in Britain & Australia.  By mid-1968 the group had parted with Guerico & Columbia but was unable to duplicate their previous successes and disbanded by 1970.  Guerico went on to further production success with brass-heavy bands Blood, Sweat & Tears & Chicago Transit Authority (later known as ‘Chicago’).  The group reformed in 1983 & by the middle of that decade were on the ‘Happy Together’ touring package of oldies groups that included the Turtles, Grassroots & Gary Lewis & The Playboys.  With various personnel changes – original & replacement members kept changing, the Buckinghams began recording again in the early 2000’s while continuing tours on the oldies circuit. In Nov 2008 they recorded a Christmas album – “The Joy Of Christmas”.  Currently, they perform regularly to festival audiences and have played sold-out shows in addition to casino venues throughout the country and perform the national anthem at home games of baseball teams such as the Chicago Cubs & White Sox.  From Puget Sound Media, enjoy this slice of pop-soul as we embark on the weekend.
